On Tuesday, July 24, NALCAB held its 2012 Border Summit on Pathways to Sustainable Communities in McAllen, TX. This event marks the 5th consecutive year that Citi sponsors the Summit. In addition, thank you to our contributing partners, the University of Texas Pan American, BBVA Compass, and Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc (AHSTI).

Mayors

Over 200 national leaders came together to hear from Steve Murdock, Ph.D. and Professor at Rice University, his presentation titled The Changing Demography of the Border Region, Texas and the Nation, to download presentation, click here. Nonprofit leaders also had a chance to hear from Mayor Richard Cortez of McAllen, Mayor Raul Salinas of Laredo and Mayor Arturo Garino of Nogales who shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities of the Border economy. Dr. Walter Diaz, Dean of UTPA’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, moderated the panel on the topic of the Eagle Ford Shale Consortium with Leodoro Martinez, Chairman of Eagle Ford Shale Consortium, and Jose L. Ceballos, Consultant for America's Natural Gas Alliance.

The day concluded with a federal panel of speakers discussing the Border Capital Community Initiative (BCCI), recently announced by HUD, USDA and US Treasury’s CDFI Fund for supporting community and economic development along the Border Region.
