Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore

Baltimore, MD

Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Baltimore area communities through innovative home ownership strategies, creative loan products, and quality education and counseling to new and potential home owners.  Together with the full support and involvement of neighborhood residents, government representatives and corporate business partners.

Since 1974, Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore has been dedicated to the revitalization of Baltimore neighborhoods through homeownership opportunities. Within those years, programs and products have changed to best fill the needs of the communities, and NHS of Baltimore has been able to remain a source of support for Baltimore households.

NHS of Baltimore, Inc. was founded through the efforts of several distinct groups that sought to reverse the decline of the Southeast Baltimore neighborhoods directly north of Patterson Park. Neighborhood residents, the Southeast Community Organization (SECO), the Ford Foundation, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board's Urban Reinvestment Task Force, Baltimore City government, and local savings and loan executives came together to create this important initiative.

As NHS of Baltimore began to build a successful track record in rehabilitation lending, homeownership promotion and revitalization in the Patterson Park area, other neighborhoods became interested in the work of NHS of Baltimore.  The successful NHSB partnership model was replicated in other neighborhoods as the resource base allowed.

NHS works to:

  • Promote home ownership
  • Improve the physical appearance of neighborhoods
  • Develop community leadership
  • Stabilize the local real estate market
