Make the Road New York
Brooklyn, NY
Make the Road New York's mission is to promote economic justice, equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers through community and electoral organizing, strategic policy advocacy, leadership development, youth and adult education, and high quality legal and support services
Make the Road New York (MRNY) was created in the fall of 2007 through the merger of Make the Road by Walking and the Latin American Integration Center, two of New York City’s most innovative and effective grassroots organizations. The merger was a natural partnership that built on proven successes and created a new citywide organization that combines democratic accountability to low–income people and an innovative mix of strategies to confront inequity and economic injustice, while fostering deep and active community roots. MRNY is an organization that is membership–led and based in the low–income communities of Bushwick, Brooklyn, Jackson Heights, Queens, and Port Richmond, Staten Island. MRNY 7,000+ members are primarily low–income Latino/a immigrants, seventy–five percent of whom are women.
Make the Road New York catalyzes change for low-income New Yorkers by working in five Impact Areas:
1. Expanding Civil Rights and Civic Engagement
2. Promoting Health for all New Yorkers
3. Improving Housing and Fostering Environmental Justice
4. Winning Justice in the Workplace
5. Promoting Access, Excellence and Opportunity in Education
MRNY multifaceted approach to promoting justice in each of these impact areas transforms individual lives and brings about broad-based policy change at the city, state and national levels.
